ARTISTS STUDIO: A thirteenth-century cabin was the studio to one of Sweden's most prolific painters, Anders Zorn (1860-1920), now known as Zornmuseet, which displays the world's largest collection of Zorn's paintings.

 
 
 

About Saturday Studio

Each workshop has an artist-inspired theme and combines exciting hands-on creation with exploration of real world art by modern masters for the day’s activity (Van Gogh, O’Keefe, Matisse).

We begin each day with a digital slideshow of the featured artist:

  1. Draw Me/Draw You (Selfies): VINCENT VAN GOGH
    Long before digital selfies became popular, many artists painted self-portraits. We’ll explore work by Van Gogh who created over 35 self-portraits. Participants will first draw themselves and then each other exploring various styles and mediums.
    Mediums: (Pen, Pencils, Ink, Marker, Watercolor or Acrylic)

  2. Still Life: GEORGIA O’KEEFFE
    To See Takes Time: Exhibit on view at MoMA through August 12)
    Dive into Georgia O’Keefe’s larger than life flowers. Are they portraits? Or still life?
    Mediums: (Pen, Pencils, Ink, Marker, Watercolor or Acrylic)

  3. Collage + Printmaking: HENRI MATISSE
    (Online Catalog: Matisse. The Cut Outs, MoMA, Oct 12, 2014–Feb 10, 2015)
    Bold and vibrant colors and shapes of nature
    Trace and cut organic shapes to explore compositions
    Mediums: (Pencils, glue, scissors, papers, poster paint or Acrylic)

  4. Still Life Studio: Painting or Drawing from a changing weekly setup
    Paint or draw in medium of your choice. Work independently or with guidance .
    MEDIUMS: Watercolor, oil, acrylic, pastels, casein. PDF Materials list available
    We will carry basic supplies for painting or drawing in our Zane Grey Gallery.

Meets Saturday Morning + Afternoons

CLASSROOM: Meets Saturdays, AM or PM at Narrowsburg Union Gallery first-floor air-conditioned classroom with worktables, chairs, sinks. Handicap accessible.
SUPPLIES: Canson watercolor 140 LB paper provided for each session.
MEDIUMS: Acrylics or gouache, watercolor, pens, pencils, markers, glue.
Scissors, rulers, erasers, variety of papers. (no oil paints or solvents)

  • VINCENT VAN GOGH: Selfies or “Draw Me, Draw You”

  • GEORGIA O’KEEFE: Watercolor Still Life or Florals (It Takes Time to See)

  • HENRI MATISSE: Collage/Printmaking. Explore patterns and cut-out shapes

  • CAMILLE COROT LANDSCAPE SKETCH. Simplifed observation of landscape basics with a limited palette. Charcoal, pencil on toned papers. (Gouache or watercolor)

  • STILL LIFE STUDIO: Paint or Draw from a still life set-up or live model in the medium of your choice. Work independently or with guidance on materials, techniques and composition.

COLLAGE + PRINTMAKING: HENRI MATISSE, “Shapes of Nature.” Interpret the shapes of nature in bold and vibrant compositions with paper cut out Matisse and hand-painted accents.. Perfect opportunity to collaborate with a friend or parent/child.
MEDIUMS: (Pencils, glue, scissors, papers, poster paint or Acrylic) Non-toxic.

Fees and Registration

  • FEES: $25.00 Includes basic sketch materials and papers.
    Watercolors, Oils or Pastels extra. Brushes, palettes and panels available for purchase.

  • MULTI-session or monthly discounts available

  • EIGHT students maximum

  • Parental release form and emergency contact info required (under eighteen):

  • Photography not permitted unless otherwise requested.

Materials and safety

Every effort is made to use non-toxic artist materials, however all are reminded to use materials in a safe manner and to wash hands frequently.

MEDIUMS: Acrylics or gouache, watercolor, pens, pencils, markers, glue. (no oil paints or solvents). Scissors, rulers, erasers, variety of papers.
